Jack Standley

Jack Standley joined the Grand Rapids Camera Club in 1984. He started taking photos at a young age, he loved being outdoors and must of his subjects were what he found around him, weather it was animals, flowers or the landscape in general. As his interest grew he enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida, visiting Cypress Gardens and the Everglades to photograph the various birds of the area.Jack was an eager competitor in the club, especially with assigned subjects and nature categories.He received many Honorable Mentions and a few trophies at Year-end competitions.Jack and his wife Margaret hosted the Year-end judging in their home for over a decade.

Jack got involved with the Grand Rapids Camera Club (GRCC) soon after he became a member.By 1988 he was a competition judge and a member of the club board of directors until his death in 1998. He also served as Vice-president of Equipment for several years.Although he entered the competitions, he was especially proud to share his photography with his slide programs, accompanied with narrative and music which he showed at GRCC and the Southwestern Michigan Council of Camera Clubs (SWMCCC) Summer Weekend of Photography. He put together countless programs of his travels to locations such as British Columbia, Bahamas, Alaska, Mackinac Island, everywhere he traveled he had camera in hand.

He submitted a program on “Mailbox Art” to the Photographic Society of America (PSA) for their photo assay competition.He put together an extensive article called “Take Your Show on the Road” with lists, plans, photos and great how to, for taking your slide programs anywhere with ease. PSA published it in their November 1998 PSA Journal. Jack had his photographs published in In Celebration of Grand Rapids and the Michigan Natural Resources Magazine.

Jack Standley was a great showman and loved to share his photographic skills and his adventures with any photographer and non photographer who would appreciate his efforts.
